In 2007, the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society provided funds to purchase plants for a butterfly garden project adjacent to Ibis Pond.

In 2008, Master Gardeners were asked to take over the care and maintenance of the garden, and with the help of the Friends group and the Pinckney Refuge volunteers.

The butterfly garden not only provides an important habitat for many different butterfly species, but it also serves as a great way to educate refuge visitors about butterflies, host, nectar and native plants. Several touring groups stop weekly and many other visitors enjoy the butterfly garden as they walk the island.
