Area Wide Volunteer Opportunities

                                                      Rent-a-Master Gardener Teams
The Rent-a-Master Gardener program was started in 2008, modeled after the Rent-a-Master Gardener program in Aiken, SC. The purpose of the Rent-a-Master Gardener program is to assist homeowners with the challenges of gardening in the Lowcountry. Many are “transplants” from other climates and simply don’t know what to plant or how to take care of the plants they have.

Teams are divided into three areas:  Beaufort (North of the Broad), Bluffton/Okatie, and Hilton Head. A team of Master Gardeners and Interns visits with the homeowner, walks the property and answers the homeowner’s questions. Following the visit, team members participate in the preparation of a report assembled by the Team Leader that is sent to the homeowner.

Rent-a-Master Gardener site visits are an excellent learning opportunity for team members. They agree unanimously that they learn something new at every visit – either from other team members or their research for the report. Master Gardener interns are encouraged to participate to fulfill the requirement for “Educational Service” hours.

Participating on a team is rewarding and educational. The feedback from homeowners has been very positive. They are grateful that such a service exists in Beaufort County, and we have received many referrals from satisfied homeowners.
